Poppy seeds- Black: Papaver somniferum L: Also known as the "European" poppy seeds are best known for opium, but the actual seeds do not have any narcotic properties. They have a mild sweetish aroma brought out when baked. The flavour is very mild until heated when it becomes nutty with undercurrents that are spicy/sweet.
Uses in Cooking: Put them into or sprinkle on top of breads, buns, cakes, pastries, strudels & Danish pastries. Fry in butter & add to salads, pasta , vegetables, especially asparagus & root vegetables and fish dishes.
