Vanilla Beans


In the top 3 of the most expensive spices, due to the lengthly growing and harvesting process. It takes 9 months to mature and another 9 months to be cured.

Uses in Cooking: The unique flavour is used extensively in cakes, custards, creme, puddings and ice cream. Allow 1 bean per 1/2 litre liquid. Bring to the boil. Cool for an hour before removing pod/bean. This can be done several times with the same pod/bean, as long as it is washed after use, dried and stored in an airtight container. To make your own vanilla sugar, bury a bean/pod into the sugar, making sure no light can reach it. After about 2 weeks you will have vanilla sugar.
